Its February already and I'm just finishing my first quilt in 2017. I'm ok with that though because I have two others that just need the binding hand sewn down. So, soon I will have triple the finishes!
I took a photo before I finished quilting the last corner of the quilt. I spent weeks and weeks quilting this. It seemed like it would never end. I did get really efficient by the end though after making the two motifs a zillion times each. Every fabric in this quilt has dots on it. I bought the top and binding as a kit and used fabrics from my stash for the backing. Most of my stash yardage is 1 yd cuts, so I had to make a scrappy backing. I was delayed in putting on the binding because I had to stop and make new labels for 2017. I have a few extra 2016 labels as I thought I was going to finish a few more quilts last year.
Here's the finished quilt top. I used Wonderfil's Fabulux 40wt polyester variegated thread in the color Springtime. Its yellow, green and purple. I love how the quilting looks close up, but from afar it doesn't overpower the piecing or look dark on the white background. This thread sews beautifully in my machine. I'm currently in the process of collecting every color.
There are two motifs on this quilt. My goal was to highlight that the squares formed a circle. I originally planned on using different size circle templates, but when I started planning it out, it just didn't work. The motif in the center of the circle starts with a star touching the corner or mid-point of each square, connected around the outside with two continuous curves. I filled in the center with 4 continuous curve petals and filled in the blank spaces w/ swirls. I'm really happy with this as I feel like it really highlights the circle. For the secondary design, or space between the square circle I made a curved diamond shape and put 4 circles centered in the middle, which makes a repeat of the petal shape. I put another petal shape connecting the curved diamonds. The space left un-quilted between the two motifs looks like a butterfly to me. For filler I chose a tight back and forth pattern. To keep it simple I used this everywhere. This really shows off the variegated thread and helps give contrast with the un-quilted/less quilted areas.
I have to get a shot of the cats in. This quilt has wool batting and they can't get enough of this quilt. They have taken every chance they can to get on it or under it from the moment I got the batting out. Maybe I'll make them some kitty quilts w/ wool batting scraps. Here I am trying to bind the quilt and they're all over it.
Here's a shot of how the quilting looks on the back of the quilt. I used white Wonderfil Decobob. Its an 80 wt. polyester and just blends right in. I'm a new fan of rewound bobbins as well. I bought them in several common colors.
